This is really interesting map that highlights the most photographed sights in the world.  It's nice that you can zoom into your home city and see the most popular spots there too.

Connections to Juniper Network Connect VPN does not seem to work by default in the new Safari 6.1.  To get it to work you need to run java on the VPN page in unsafe mode i.e.

* Safari->Preferences->Security tab
* “Manage Website Settings…” button in the bottom right
* Highlight “Java” from the list.
* Add your VPN site
* Click the popup menu and select “Run in Unsafe Mode”

I like the look of this. It would be especially good in more secluded paths.

Here's something neat -- a fluorescent surfacing material for bike paths, which absorbs sunlight during the day and glows softly at night, to make it easier to navigate. I'd have a lot of questions about how it works (how long the glow lasts, how durable the material is, etc.) but the idea seems marvelous.

* August DVB-T205 - Part 2 *

I'm trying to get a cheapo USB digital TV tuner called the August DVB-T205 (v2) to work on Ubuntu 12.04 .  The last approach failed but the following post sorted it and I used the ppa mentioned there:

* http://ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-2109585.html

Other things that helped:
* http://angrytechnician.wordpress.com/2013/05/08/another-way-to-scan-dvb-channels-w_scan/
* http://www.ukfree.tv/txdetail.php?a=TM131958

So I have basically linked tvheadend and xbmc.  The live tv works but not sure about recording yet.

Our new cover photo: what can you find?

This afternoon Google UK uploaded a new cover photograph for our Google+ page.

Last month we asked for your suggestions on what should appear - you'll find many of your ideas have been added to this design.

Whilst it's not a geographical representation of the UK, it does highlight several landmarks, characters and icons from across the country.

What can you find?

You may be able to find a nod to the longitude of the Greenwich meridian too.

Mirroring a website where you need to log in first

I needed to make an complete offline copy of a website the other day but was having difficulties as you needed to login to the site to get the content.  Luckily, an firefox add-on plus the wonderful wget came to the rescue.

Export cookies (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/export-cookies/?src=api) is a firefox add-on that lets you export cookies in a format that wget understands.

So here is the procedure:
1) Log in to the website
2) Export the cookies into a cookies.txt file
3) Run wget
wget --load-cookies cookies.txt -mkEp  http://website.com
4) Hey-presto

"BananaBread is a 3D first person shooter that runs on the web. It takes the Cube 2: Sauerbraten engine, which is written in C++ and OpenGL, and compiles it using Emscripten into JavaScript and WebGL so that it can run in modern browsers using standards-based web APIs and without the need for plugins."

Wow that's amazing.

This is a great illustration of collective phenomena.

This is a great illustration of collective phenomena. If you look closely, each dot is just moving around in a regular circle; but because the different circles are out of phase with each other, when you back away you see waves steadily moving across the screen. It's a simple demonstration of how large-scale, collective phenomena can emerge from very simple small-scale behavior. Things like this happen all over the place: water waves and sound waves, for example, work in basically the same way, with the small back-and-forth motions of individual molecules leading to compression patterns moving through the air.

Painless upgrading of R and bioconductor

Painless upgrading of R and bioconductor

I keep forgetting how to do this, so I thought I would write it down.

* Install new version of R
* Copy old library to new directory e.g. cp -R ~/Library/R/2.15   ~/Library/R/3.0
* Run R
* update.packages(checkBuilt=TRUE, ask=FALSE)
* source("http://bioconductor.org/biocLite.R")
* biocLite(ask=FALSE)

This is interesting, researchers have found a new longer form of PTEN a tumour suppressor gene.

This is interesting, researchers have found a new longer form of PTEN a tumour suppressor gene.  They found that unlike the normal form of PTEN that is isolated within a cell this version can move to neighbouring cells.  They also showed that the longer version of PTEN helped reduced the size of tumours both in mice and in the petri dish.
